Shock Leader & Uni knot

Q: What is a "shock leader"?

A: A heavier breaking strain piece of line that is attached to your main fishing line so that it does not break during the cast.

Q: Why should I use a shock leader?

A: Mainly for safety, so that you do not break of during a power cast and cause damage or injure someone. Also reduce the loss of terminal tackle when fishing due to break offs during the cast and because the shock leader is what takes most of the ware from sand bars etc.

Q: What pound test line should I use?

A: A good rule of thumb is to take the amount of weight that you are going to cast and multiply it by 10 then convert to lbs to give the minimum breaking strain in lbs of the line to use as a shock leader.

Q: How long should it be?

A: The minimum length of the leader for casting weights should be: Go five times around the reel, up to the tip of the rod and back to the spool, this is the minimum length.

Q: How do I attach a shock leader to my main running line.

A: There are many ways to attach a shock leader but my favorite for fishing is the Uni-Knot to an overhand in the thick line. For long casting I use the blob knot method. When using a super braid like Power Pro I will make as many as 8 turns in the Uni-knot as super braids tend to slip. I prefer a mono shocker to a super braid as it tends to be more resistant to abrasion.

UltraMag Conversion

How to tune a Ultra Mag for the casting field.

The reel we are about to convert was purchased as converted and needed some work to get it up to speed with modern conversion techniques. Some work had been done but they had left the old rubber O ring on the end of the spool spindle. By using the Andy Green method we can stabilize the spool better during the cast.

Picture 1: Shows us inside the left hand bayonet. First job is to increase the thread length on the mag. screw 1. (this will allow you to bring the magnets back further from the spool) and glue firmly in place. 2. Grind the lip smaller on the magnet retaining plate, if you don't do this it will rub preventing full fall back.

Picture 2: Shows we need to grind some plastic off and remove spindle holder. We need to make sure that nothing will effect the mag. plate from laying flat when placed inside the bayonet housing.

These pictures show how we now use 2 brass washers instead of the rubber O ring. Use a conical spring on the backing screw. These springs collapse easer and flatter.

When you get the spacing correct the spindle will be flush with the ridge on the spindle.

Now we start work on the other side:

We have got to remove this lip from the right hand side plastic line guide.  The best way is to pull the spool to bits, gear side and push the plastic out with a screw driver.

Grind the lip off on the spool side and you have got to take the lip off the gear side ( the back of the line guide. ) to get it back together.  When it is done use some good epoxy to hold it in place.

It's a good time to clean all the funny bits whilst you are at it.

Now for my secret weapon. I replace the old spool with a gold spool from ABU. I then put 3 washer under the gear side of the spool bearing and one on the mag. side. This makes for a very smooth reel. The other bits I just sling in the trash.  Hope this helps.  Nickaway
